A specialty coffee business in Argyll and Bute has opened a new coffee unit in the area and continues to grow, after receiving support from Business Gateway.

Argyll Coffee Roasters was founded in 2018 by coffee enthusiast Eve McFarlane.

He sources the finest beans from around the world – with an emphasis on ethically sourced specialty beans – and roasts them by hand at his Tighnabruaich roastery.

Selling through local stockists, its website and its ‘Roast and Post’ coffee subscription service, the company also recently opened the Coffee Bar at the Hayshed Gallery, a few miles from the roastery.

Owner Eve, who moved from Bristol to Argyll over 10 years ago, was passionate about thriving local food and drink producers and saw an opportunity to bring her knowledge and interest in coffee into the region.

She contacted Business Gateway when starting the business and received personalized advice from a local business consultant.

Since then it has received additional support including a grant from the Accelerating Local Growth Program, funded by Argyll and Bute Council and the European Regional Development Fund Structural Funds Program 2014-20.

The funding allowed him to train as a barista and purchase equipment, including a commercial coffee machine for his coffee unit.

The coffee unit provides the opportunity to sell and promote Argyll Coffee Roasters’ range of specialty coffees and coffee kits while working with other local businesses to sell baked goods.

Eve also received expert recruitment advice as she hired three new permanent staff and recently completed an intensive growth support program with Business Gateway.

After receiving support from Business Gateway, Argyll Coffee Roasters opened a new unit and continues to grow.

“I truly appreciate a well-brewed coffee and have always wanted to bring something to my community in Argyll that gives them the opportunity to explore the amazing coffee on offer around the world,” Eve said.

‘The advice and support I have received from Business Gateway has been fantastic; from early start-up advice to orientation on funding and additional qualifications, which made my dream come true.

“My advisor couldn’t have been more helpful and was always happy to answer any questions I had throughout my journey. With their support, I was able to grow my business, grow my team, and give back to the community.

Barbara Halliday, Business Gateway Advisor, said: ‘Eve has a great passion for the industry and this has been reflected in our time working together and is why Argyll Coffee Roasters is such a huge success.

“We worked together to build his confidence and skills, and it took his business to new heights.

“Partnering with local bakeries for the Coffee Bar has been a great way to introduce the brand to new customers, while promoting the region’s brilliant local producers.”

Argyll Coffee Roasters received the Great Taste Award and the Scottish Food and Drink Award in 2022 for its Clyde Steamer blend.

Eve continues to work with specialists at Business Gateway and plans to expand the functionality of her website to increase the number of wholesale customers.
